Jim Finseth, Fine Wood Artist
Chest of Drawers
Challenge: A customer cut a picture out of a magazine of a contemporary Chest of Drawers. She asked Jim to build her a custom piece of furniture that matched the picture.
Solution: When Jim’s customer asked: “Can you build this?” Jim replied: “Why not?” Jim sketched out a plan that defined dimensions. To keep the rustic, “warn” look, Jim built the piece using stained solid yellow “common” poplar with the knots intentionally left in. The wood was dried and seasoned in Jim’s shop, and used for the top, drawers, and facing of the piece. Then all the wood was stained to match the colors and texture seen in the original photograph.
Result: Jim delivered a piece of custom furniture that was an exact match to the picture from the magazine. His customer was delighted, and keeps the original picture from the magazine in the top drawer so she can tell the story to her friends.
