Challenge: This church added a professional sound system to their sanctuary. The audio equipment was placed on a piece of plywood placed over two pews, which looked tacky and offered no security. A better solution was needed.
Solution: Jim thought about this project carefully. He wanted a design that would lock the equipment in a cabinet efficiently. He began with a design that used a tambour top, which worked like a roll-top desk. But the solution would prove to be unreliable. Instead, Jim used flipper door hardware slides that enabled a solid top to be placed over the equipment and locked up. To match the church’s interior design, Jim crafted a custom handrail that matched the handrail on top of the pews. The church used this same handrail design for new balcony railings. Used for cabinet and new balcony railing. Jim constructed the cabinets and handrails using solid oak, and stained rails, doors and drawers to match the church’s existing wood.
Result: Jim designed and built functional furniture that blended with existing interior of church. The minister said: “We’ve needed this for a long time.”
