Jim Finseth, Fine Wood Artist
Home Offices
Challenge: After finishing this customer’s living room, dining room, kitchen and master bath, Jim Finseth’s customer asked him to build a custom desk and cabinets for his home office. The idea was to incorporate a unique curved desktop that matched the room’s design that featured 3 foot wall panel sections and custom cabinets.
Solution: Jim began by hand sketching the desktop to show the customer what the final piece would look like. He began desk construction using a single large piece of solid cherry, and he cut the curve cut into this piece. Then he used three ¼ inch layers of Cherry for the sides of the desktop. He incorporated purple heart hardwood accents around outside edge of desktop to provide an elegant look. The desk features fluted column legs. One leg was hollowed out to accommodate electrical, phone, and network connections. Jim constructed the home office’s cabinets and wall panels using stained cherry to offer a more traditional color of the wood.
Result: Jim’s customer calls this room his “functional man cave.” The finished desk, cabinets, and wall treatments are exactly what Jim’s customer was looking for.
